Ambassador Zhang Ming Visits ITER Organization

On 10 September, at the invitation of Energy Director-General Dominique Ristori of the European Commission, Ambassador Zhang Ming led a delegation to the ITER Organization located in Cadarache, France.

Ambassador Zhang listened to a presentation given by ITER DG Bernard Bigot and exchanged views on the details of the ITER project. After the discussion, DG Bigot gave the delegation a guided worksite tour.

Ambassador Zhang also met with Chinese staff working for ITER, and exchanged views on various topics including training and career prospects.

Ambassador Zhang was accompanied by Mr. Jin Ju, Head of Office of External Relations and Action Plan Implementation, Mr. Jan Panek, Head of ITER Unit, EC DG ENER, and Mr Johannes Schwemmer, Head of the Euratom Domestic Agency for ITER (Fusion for Energy).

ITER, short for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, is the largest science project in the world. This mega-project aims to prove the scientific and technological feasibility of the use of fusion energy for peaceful purposes. It is an important step taken to address the potential energy crisis and environmental pollution confronting the whole mankind. The project consists of seven members, namely EU, China, the United States, Russia, India, Japan and ROK. In October 2007, ITER Organization was established with its headquarters in Cadarache, southern France.
