Remarks by the Chinese Mission Spokesperson on EU Statement on Hong Kong

Q: Recently, an EU statement expressed concerns about the Hong Kong SAR Government's amendment to the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance as well as its potential consequences for business confidence in Hong Kong. What is China's comment?

A: The Hong Kong SAR Government’s amendment to the ordinances, an exercise of its lawful duty, is aimed at improving the law and is supported by the mainstream public opinion in Hong Kong. This is an internal affair of China. The Chinese side expresses grave concerns about and strong opposition to the EU's irresponsible and erroneous remarks on the amendment, and has made representation to the EU side. We urge the EU side to look at the amendment objectively and fairly, speak and act prudently, and stop interfering in any form in Hong Kong’s affairs and China's internal affairs.

Since the return of Hong Kong, The policy of "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy has been effectively implemented. The Hong Kong SAR maintains prosperity and stability, and has been rated by many international institutions as one of the world's freest economies and most competitive territories. The rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong citizens are fully protected in accordance with law. As for concern that the amendment may affect the confidence of the international community in Hong Kong’s development, it is totally unnecessary.
