Spokesperson of the Chinese Mission to the EU Speaks on a Question Concerning Ilham Tohti Being Shortlisted for a Prize of the European Parliament

Q: It’s reported that on October 8, members of the European Parliament shortlisted Ilham Tohti for the 2019 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, together with the other two finalists. What is your comment?

A: Ilham Tohti was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Chinese judicial authorities for separatist crimes. What he did was aimed to split the country and instigate hatred, violence and terrorist acts. Such moves are not allowed by any country.

China and the EU have a shared stake in fighting extremism and terrorism. We urge the relevant European institutions and people to distinguish right and wrong, not to be deceived and misled, and not to send any wrong signal that could support crimes and separatist activities.
