Spokesperson of the Chinese Mission to the EU Speaks on a Question Concerning Declaration by the High Representative on behalf of the European Union on Hong Kong

Q: The declaration on Hong Kong by the High Representative on behalf of the EU on 18 November said that in light of the continuing rise in violence in Hong Kong, it is crucial that all sides exercise restraint and engage constructively in de-escalation efforts, that actions by the law enforcement authorities must remain strictly proportionate, while fundamental freedoms must be upheld, and that a comprehensive inquiry into the violence, use of force and the root causes of the protests is a critical element in de-escalation efforts.. What’s your comment?

A: We are strongly concerned about and firmly opposed to the inappropriate remarks on Hong Kong repeatedly made by the EU side.

What’s happening in Hong Kong is not peaceful demonstration, but rather violence against ordinary citizens committed by extreme and violent criminals. The most pressing task for Hong Kong at the moment is to end violence and chaos and restore law and order. What the Hong Kong police are doing is entirely about protecting life and properties of Hong Kong residents and maintaining social order in accordance with law. It is absolutely misleading and inappropriate for the EU side to lump together the lawful exercise of duties by Hong Kong police with the extreme and violent offences.

Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs that brook no foreign interference. The EU has no right to lecture others. We urge the EU side to immediately stop making irresponsible remarks, and stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs and China's other domestic affairs.
