2015-04-29 16:52

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

At the outset, I wish to express our deep shock at the reports of massive earthquake that has caused devastation in Nepal this morning.

We extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the Government and the people of Nepal on the tragedy that has caused loss of precious lives and properties.

And we express solidarity with the affected people of Nepal in their hour of grief.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

On the occasion of celebrating the 40th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations, I am honored and pleased to welcome you all to this evening's dance drama Dream of the Maritime Silk Road.

More than 2,000 years ago, people of Eurasia explored and opened up several routes of trade and cultural exchanges collectively known as the Silk Road.

Whether on land or on seas the Silk Road contributed greatly to prosperity and development of countries along the routes.

Dedicated to the glorious days of the Maritime Silk Road during the Song Dynasty, tonight's dance drama tells a story of how Chinese and other Asia merchants go through thick and thin, and share weal and woe.

With a unique blend of classical Chinese music, dance, and costumes, the performance displays the love and friendship, adventure and inheritance of people living along the Maritime Silk Road 800 years ago, and it also inspires us to carry on the spirit of the Silk Road and build the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road for peace, prosperity and progress.

On behalf of the Chinese Mission to the EU and in my own name, I wish to express our deepest appreciation to our gifted artists. By staging this dance drama, you are not only showcasing a great and unique legacy of the Chinese civilization, but also enriching the multi-ethnic cultural life of Belgium, and adding luster to the celebration of the 40th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic ties.

I wish this evening's performance every success. I am sure that the audience will leave with a fond memory of an enjoyable and entertaining evening.
