Brussels, 26 September 2016
Your Excellency Vice-President Kristalina Georgieva,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all on the auspicious occasion of the 67th National Day of the People’s Republic of China.
On behalf of the Chinese Mission to the EU and in my own name, I wish to express our heartfelt thanks to you for joining us and to what you have done in the past years to strengthen friendship and cooperation between China and the EU.
Today is an excellent occasion to celebrate the achievements of China in the advancement of its development strategy and the 13th Five Year Plan.
Thanks to reform, innovation, adjustment and transformation, the Chinese economy has maintained stability and performed within the appropriate range.
China’s GDP has registered steady growth, 6.7% in the first half of this year. The employment situation is stable. Grain production has seen another bumper harvest. Corporate profits in the industrial sector are steadily rising. The service industry is growing rapidly. And energy intensity and emissions of major pollutants have continued to fall. The fundamentals of the Chinese economy remain unchanged.
As a responsible and constructive member of the international community and permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has steadfastly pursued an independent foreign policy of peace.
We have advanced the Belt and Road Initiative to build greater connectivity and provide strong impetus to regional development and integration.
We have successfully hosted G20 Hangzhou Summit to offer new solutions to improve global economic and financial governance and unlock new driving force for growing the global economy.
We have continued our efforts to build a framework of major-country relations based on constructive interaction and win-win cooperation.
We have upheld world peace and advanced the process of seeking political settlement of hotspot issues.
We have, together with the EU, successfully convened the 18th China-EU Summit which demonstrated our shared vision to strengthen China-EU Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. We have broadened and deepened our communication, coordination and cooperation across the board, and we are committed to focusing on and significantly expanding our convergence of interests and working together to bring about an even better future for China-EU Comprehensive Partnership featuring peace, growth, reform and civilization.
Looking ahead, while the international environment remains complex and challenging and downward economic pressure is not to be underestimated, yet, the fact that we have stood up to challenges shows that China has the confidence and capability to achieve steady progress in pursuing the vision of innovative, coordinated, green, open and shared development and achieve the main economic and social development targets set for this year.
The celebration of this special day also reminds us that we are not dreaming our dreams alone. It is in the interest of the entire international community to pursue the shared dream of a better future together in unity.
With this in mind, China will continue to shoulder our due international responsibility and make an even greater contribution to the happiness of our peoples and world peace and prosperity.
Once again, thank you for coming and sharing this celebration with us. I hope you will enjoy this wonderful evening.
