Ambassador Zhang Ming Pays A Courtesy Call to Vice President Jyrki Katainen

On 15 November 2017, Ambassador Zhang Ming, Head of the Chinese Mission to the European Union, paid a courtesy call to Vice President Jyrki Katainen of the European Commission. The two sides exchanged views on China-EU relations and economic and trade cooperation.

Vice President Katainen welcomed Ambassador Zhang to take the new role. He said that the EU and China have maintained close, in-depth, productive and constructive cooperation over the years, and have a shared stake in addressing global challenges together. VP Katainen said that, as the European co-chair of the EU-China High-level Economic and Trade Dialogue (HED), he appreciates very much the close working and personal relationship with Chinese leadership. He hopes to keep close contact with the Chinese side to further advance EU-China relations.

Ambassador Zhang gave a briefing on the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC). He said that the Congress elected the new CPC central committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, sent the key message that socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, and set out the rich meaning of the thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics. The Congress made strategic plans for China’s development in the coming 30 years and beyond. This means that China will be a stable and predictable partner of the international community for a long time to come.

Ambassador Zhang said that China places great importance on the EU and China-EU relations. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China and the EU have seen significant growth in trade, more balanced two-way investment, rapid progress in connectivity and greater convergence of interests. China and the EU may work with each other to look far and think big in order to secure bigger development of bilateral relations. The two sides need to make joint efforts to deliver a successful Tourism Year in 2018 and bring real benefits to our people.

Vice President Katainen said that the EU is closely following the important messages of the 19th Congress which he believes will bring new opportunities to EU-China relations. The EU will work with China for new progress of EU-China relations, in particular, in the area of economy and trade.
