Ambassador Zhang Ming Meets with President Georges Dassis of the European Economic and Social Committee

On 20 November 2017, Ambassador Zhang Ming, Head of the Chinese Mission to the European Union, met with President Georges Dassis of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). The two sides exchanged views on China-EU relations and other issues of mutual interest.

Ambassador Zhang briefed President Dassis on the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. The Congress sent a message that socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era and made strategic plans for China’s development in the coming 30 years and beyond. The Congress reaffirmed the importance of the basic state policy of opening-up. China will work with the EU and other members of the international community to maintain global peace and stability and promote cooperation that benefits all.

Ambassador Zhang said that close high-level exchanges between China and the EU in recent years have conveyed a positive signal of enhanced cooperation between the two sides. It is important to further implement the consensus reached by Chinese and EU leaders in order to secure new progress in our relations. Ambassador Zhang suggests that the two sides make joint efforts to deliver a successful China-EU Tourism Year in 2018. It is necessary to use the China-EU Round Table to best effect to step up communication and cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, social security and green development and to bring benefits to our people.

President Dassis thanked Ambassador Zhang for the briefing on the CPC National Congress. The President said that since the start of reform and opening-up, China has made tremendous achievements in improving livelihoods and social security, thus delivering decent life to its people. These achievements have contributed greatly to global peace and stability. President Dassis said that the EU and China need each other, and that EU-China relations are at their best in history. The EESC will work with the Chinese Mission to seize opportunities, keep close communication, and take EU-China relations forward along the right track.
