On 23 November 2017, Ambassador Zhang Ming, Head of the Chinese Mission to the European Union, paid a courtesy call to President Antonio Tajani of the European Parliament. The two sides exchanged views on China-EU relations, China-EU inter-parliamentary exchanges and other topics.

President Tajani welcomed Ambassador Zhang to take the new role, and underscored the great importance that the European Parliament places on its relations with China. Inter-parliamentary exchanges are an important part of EU-China relations. The 40th EU-China Inter-parliamentary Meeting held in Strasbourg last week was productive, in-depth and constructive. The EU and China, with a wide range of converging interests, can step up practical cooperation in such areas as trade, climate change, industry and transportation, and enhance communication on Africa and other regional affairs. The EU stands ready to work with China to ensure the success of the 2018 EU-China Tourism Year.

Ambassador Zhang briefed President Tajani on the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, stressing the significance of the Congress to the development of China and the world. The report delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping set the direction for China’s diplomacy in the new era that befits China’s role as a major country in the world. China will promote international cooperation through the Belt and Road Initiative, develop global partnerships, and uphold justice while pursuing shared interests. In global governance, China is committed to the principles of wide consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits, and will take an active part in reforming and developing the global governance system. China’s development will generate opportunities to the world and to China-EU relations.

Ambassador Zhang said that the European Parliament is an important EU institution. Enhanced inter-parliamentary exchanges and cooperation between China and the EU will contribute to the sound and steady growth of China-EU relations. China will, on the basis of mutual respect, step up exchanges and practical cooperation with the European Parliament at all levels and in different areas, increase mutual understanding, and properly handle differences. China attaches great importance to the Tourism Year as a catalyst of China-EU relations. China is ready to work with the EU to ensure success of the Tourism Year.
