Ambassador Zhang Ming and His Wife Hold a Reception Marking the Ambassador's Assumption of Office

On 5 December 2017, Ambassador Zhang Ming and his wife held a reception marking the Ambassador’s assumption of office at the Chinese Mission to the EU. More than 300 people attended the reception, including Mr. Dimitris Avramopoulos, Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Ms. Elzbieta Bieńkowska, Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, Mr. Tibor Navracsics, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, Mr. Georges Dassis, President of the European Economic and Social Committee, Mr. Dimitrios Papadimoulis, Vice President of the European Parliament as well as other EU officials. Participants also included MEPs, diplomatic envoys to the EU, leading officials of international organizations, business representatives, scholars and journalists.

The reception started with Ambassador Zhang’s remarks in which he spoke about the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the prospects of China’s development. The Ambassador said that the Congress sent a key message that socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, and set out an ambitious blueprint and guide to action for China’s future development. China will continue reforms to develop the socialist market economy, put people at the center, and strive for better quality, more efficient, fairer and more sustainable development. China will promote opening-up at a higher level, focus on the Belt and Road Initiative, adopt higher-standard policies for trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, significantly ease market access, protect the legitimate rights and interests of foreign investors, and break new grounds in all-round opening-up. China will share more opportunities with the rest of the world. China-EU relations will embrace a brighter future.

Ambassador Zhang emphasized that China always places great importance on the EU and on its relations with the EU, and firmly supports European integration. China was, is and will continue to be a stable, reliable and predictable partner of the EU. China and the EU need to pursue development together, forge closer ties and be candid to each other. It is essential to develop greater synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative and Europe’s development strategies, advance cooperation via the five platforms, and identify new areas of cooperation. The two sides need to join forces to ensure the success of the 2018 China-EU Tourism Year, and bring our people closer. China and the EU also need to look far and at the big picture, focus on the positive aspects of cooperation, properly manage differences, with a view to adding more strategic and global sense to our cooperation, and delivering benefits to our people.

Commissioner Avramopoulos, Commssioner Bieńkowska and Commissioner Navracsics also made remarks to extend warm welcome to Ambassador Zhang. They spoke positively of the results and prospects of EU-China cooperation, referring to their personal experience and portfolio, and expressed their readiness to work closely with Ambassador Zhang to advance EU-China relations. The Commissioners said that Europe and China, as two great civilizations and major forces in the world, enjoy a long history of exchanges, a solid foundation and huge potential of cooperation. The EU is keen to further deepen practical cooperation and step up people-to-people exchanges with China through the 2018 EU-China Tourism Year. It is important to increase mutual trust, address differences, and jointly tackle regional and global challenges.

The reception was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Guests extended congratulations to Ambassador Zhang and his wife, and spoke highly of China’s achievements and the outcomes of the 19th Congress. Some guests said that, under the leadership of the CPC, Chinese people have stayed united and, with hard work and creative thinking, have found a development path fit for China’s realities. Such achievements are admirable. The 19th Congress not only pointed out the way for China’s development, but also will bring valuable opportunities to Europe and the world at large, and inject strong impetus into China-EU cooperation. The guests look forward to sound and steady development of China-EU relations and even greater progress in China-EU cooperation.
