Ambassador Zhang Ming Pays a Courtesy Call to Commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis

On 7 December 2017, Ambassador Zhang Ming, Head of the Chinese Mission to the EU, paid a courtesy call to Mr. Vytenis Andriukaitis, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety of the European Commission. The two sides exchanged views on China-EU relations as well as China-EU health and food safety cooperation.

Commissioner Andriukaitis welcomed Ambassador Zhang, and expressed his wish to further EU-China cooperation on health and food safety in the broader context of the comprehensive strategic partnership.

Ambassador Zhang briefed Commissioner Andriukaitis on the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. Ambassador Zhang said that the Congress sent a significant message that socialism with Chinese features has entered a new era, and made comprehensive plans for China’s development in the coming 30 years and more. The Congress pointed out that a healthy population is a key mark of a prosperous nation and a strong country. China will continue to carry out the Healthy China initiative and food safety strategy. The Congress is of great importance to China and will provide major opportunities to Europe and the world.

Ambassador Zhang said that China pursues the policy of opening-up and attaches great importance to its cooperation with the EU. China-EU cooperation on health and food safety is essential as it benefits people of the two sides and the world at large. China looks forward to joining forces with the EU to bring cooperation in this area forward.

Commissioner Andriukaitis expressed his commitment to constructive cooperation with China in such areas as food safety, antimicrobial resistance, tobacco control and drug regulation, in a joint effort to attain the SDGs.
