Ambassador Zhang Ming Pays a Courtesy Call to Commissioner Phil Hogan

On 8 December 2017, Ambassador Zhang Ming, Head of the Chinese Mission to the EU, paid a courtesy call to Mr. Phil Hogan, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Commission. The two sides exchanged views on China-EU relations and China-EU cooperation in agriculture.

Commissioner Hogan extended welcome and congratulations to Ambassador Zhang. Commissioner Hogan said that the EU and China have extensive shared interests and enjoy good cooperation in the field of agriculture. The two sides have close exchanges in such areas as agricultural trade, investment and research, food safety, and sustainable production. The two sides have drawn on each other’s good practices, and look forward to more cooperation in the future.

Ambassador Zhang briefed Commissioner Hogan on the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, underscoring its importance to China and the wider world. President Xi Jinping sent a message that socialism with Chinese features has entered a new era, and laid out strategic plans for China’s development in the coming 30 years and more. China will aspire to achieve modernization in every dimension. For this to happen, issues related to agriculture, rural areas and rural people are of critical importance. The Congress gave top priority to agriculture and made important plans for its development.

Ambassador Zhang said that China will remain committed to the path of peaceful development and the policy of opening-up. China will open its door still wider to the outside. The Chinese government has delivered its commitment just 40 days after the Congress by rolling out concrete steps to expand opening-up. There will be even more measures to come, which will create new opportunities for Europe and the world and for China-EU relations.

Ambassador Zhang said that agriculture is important to both Europe and China. Thanks to the concerted efforts, recent years have seen good cooperation in this area. As an important part of China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership, agricultural cooperation is of great significance to the growth of bilateral relations. It is hoped that the two sides will keep communication and coordination in relevant areas.
