Ambassador Zhang Ming Pays a Courtesy Call to Commissioner Cañete for Climate Action and Energy

On 14 December 2017, Ambassador Zhang Ming, Head of the Chinese Mission to the EU, paid a courtesy call to Mr. Miguel Arias Cañete, Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy of the European Commission.

Commissioner Cañete welcomed Ambassador Zhang to Brussels, and said that the EU and China are both important players in promoting global cooperation on climate change and clean energy. The EU and China carried out effective cooperation in the negotiations leading up to the Paris Agreement and contributed greatly to its conclusion. The EU hopes to keep close communication with China to ensure sound implementation of the Agreement.

Ambassador Zhang briefed Commissioner Cañete on the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, underlining its significance to China and the wider world. The Congress made an important conclusion that socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, and made strategic plans for China’s development in the coming 30 years and more. The Congress reaffirmed the importance of green development and the Beautiful China initiative. China will take an active part in global environment governance and deliver its commitment on emissions reduction.

Ambassador Zhang said that climate change and clean energy are an important and very promising part of the wide-ranging cooperation between China and the EU. China hopes to work with the EU to follow up on the consensus reached before and step up cooperation in such areas as climate change, renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric cars, and energy innovation and investment.

The two sides also conducted exchanges on other issues of mutual interest.
