A Promotion Event for Sichuan Province Held in Brussels
2018/03/02

On 23 February 2018, a promotion event under the theme of “Taste Sichuan, Experience China” was held in Tangla Hotel Brussels. The event was co-hosted by the Chinese Mission to the EU, the Chinese Embassy to Belgium, and the Sichuan Provincial People’s Government. Over 200 people attended the event, including Chinese Ambassador to the EU Mr. Zhang Ming, Vice Governor Yang Xingping of Sichuan Province, as well as representatives of the EU institutions, regions of the EU, diplomatic missions, international organizations and Chinese communities.

Ambassador Zhang said in his speech that Sichuan has been known as the “land of abundance” since ancient times, with beautiful mountains and rivers. Its people work hard and live happy lives. Sichuan has many things to be proud of--the UNESCO heritage sites Jiuzhaigou nature reserve and Huanglong scenic area, the cute giant pandas and the delicious Sichuan food.

Ambassador Zhang said that Sichuan has an important role to play in China’s opening-up policy. The Belt and Road Initiative and the Yangtze River Economic Belt Strategy create great opportunities for Sichuan to contribute even more to China’s openness. Sichuan and Europe enjoy close connections and huge potential of cooperation. The Chengdu-Europe Express Rail links up Chinese and European industries. Last year, the Business and Innovation Center for China-Europe Cooperation was inaugurated in Chengdu, a new platform for China-Europe commercial cooperation.

Ambassador Zhang said that this year is the China-EU Tourism Year, the 15th anniversary of the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership and the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up. This event is not just about Sichuan Province. It also allows you to know more about China, a dynamic and open country that is committed to working with Europe for mutual benefit and a brighter future. Ambassador Zhang welcomed European friends to visit China and Sichuan and find more cooperation opportunities. He hopes that China and the EU will join hands in promoting the China-EU relations and bringing more benefits to people of both sides.

Vice Governor Yang Xingping made a presentation on Sichuan’s natural resources, unique culture, economic and social achievements, infrastructure and external exchanges, demonstrating the rich tourism resources and cooperation possibilities offered by the province. Vice Governor Yang said that as an important and populous province in western China, Sichuan boasts long history, beautiful scenery, well-developed industries and transportation, and huge potential for further development. Vice Governor Yang extended welcome to European friends who are interested to visit, set up businesses or settle down in Sichuan. Sichuan, with an open mind, is ready to embrace broad prospects of cooperation with Europe.

Live performances with distinct Sichuan features were staged, such as the Sichuan opera long silk dance, mask-changing and the big marionette calligraphy. There was a display area for intangible cultural heritage such as shadow puppetry, paper-cut and dough figurines. The attendees also had an opportunity to taste Sichuan gourmet.

The event presented a vivid and diverse image of China and Sichuan. Guests were deeply impressed by the food, performances and great achievements of the province. They expressed the desire to visit China and Sichuan and to look for more opportunities to contribute to China-Europe and Sichuan-Europe cooperation.
