On 14 May 2018, Ambassador Zhang Ming met with Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis of the European Commission, who is in charge of Euro and social dialogue.

Ambassador Zhang briefed Vice President Dombrovskis on President Xi Jinping’s Boao speech and the major announcements on opening-up in the speech. Ambassador Zhang said that China’s greater openness, in particular that in the financial sector, will bring opportunities to European companies and the China-EU cooperation in the fiscal and financial area. Ambassador Zhang further added that as two major actors in the world, China and the EU should and must work together more closely to reject unilateralism and protectionism, uphold the multilateral trading system, and promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation.

Vice President Dombrovskis said that the EU and China have kept intensive exchanges and made good progress in their cooperation. At both bilateral and global levels, the two sides have good cooperation in financial services and regulation. The EU welcomes China’s message on reform and opening-up, and shares China’s position on upholding the international multilateral trading system and opposing unilateralism.
