Ambassador Zhang Ming Addressed the Luncheon Hosted by The Belgian-Chinese Chamber of Commerce
2018/05/29

On 17 May 2018, Ambassador Zhang Ming attended the luncheon hosted by the Belgian-Chinese Chamber of Commerce (BCECC), and delivered a keynote speech entitled “An Open China Brings a Brighter Future for China-EU Economic and Trade Relations”. Mr. Herman Van Rompuy, former President of the European Council, attended and addressed the luncheon.

Ambassador Zhang said that China’s reform and opening-up in the past 40 years have not only produced miraculous achievements for China itself, but also delivered benefits to the world. China will continue to expand opening-up and is translating its commitment into concrete actions. The China-EU economic and trade relations enjoy huge potential thanks to the new possibilities generated by China’s further opening. Ambassador Zhang emphasized that China and the EU need to jointly uphold the multilateral trading system, focus on common ground and identify more promising areas of cooperation, and handle differences in a smart way.

Mr. Van Rompuy said that the EU-China relations are mature, comprehensive and diversified, with deep cooperation in many fields in addition to trade. Despite the differences in development model and political system, the EU and China have common values in certain areas as well as shared interests at bilateral and multilateral levels. The two sides need to further strengthen the relations on the basis of mutual respect and mutual trust and address differences through dialogue.

Following the speeches, Ambassador Zhang and Mr. Van Rompuy answered questions from the audience. The event was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere.
