2019/05/15

On May 10, 2019, Ambassador Zhang Ming met with Maroš Šefčovič, Vice President of the European Commission for Energy Union.

Mr. Šefčovič thanked China for inviting him to the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) as Special Representative of President Jean-Claude Juncker, and congratulated China on the great success of the forum. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the forum showed China’s open and positive gesture towards advancing cooperation on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The EU appreciates China’s attitude and is ready to cement the synergies between the EU-Asia Connectivity Strategy and the BRI, thus contributing to the growth of China-EU relations and world peace and prosperity.

Ambassador Zhang noted that leaders of both sides reaffirmed during the 21st China-EU Summit the consensus on cementing the synergies between the EU-Asia Connectivity Strategy and the BRI. Sending a high-level representative to the BRF marks an active move of the EU to implement the Summit’s outcomes. China considers the EU an important partner to promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. In the next stage, it is crucial to ensure that concrete and practical actions are taken with a more constructive approach, bringing the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the EU to a new height.
