Ambassador Zhang Ming talks about Iran nuclear deal: nobody wants to see the law of the jungle prevail

On May 20, 2019, Ambassador Zhang Ming, Head of the Chinese Mission to the EU, gave an interview to Bloomberg in Brussels.

When asked about how China and the EU will ensure the effective implementation of the Iran nuclear deal, Ambassador Zhang Ming said that the JCPOA is a multilateral agreement endorsed by the UN Security Council. It is vital to the global non-proliferation regime and to peace and stability in the Middle East, Europe’s immediate neighborhood, so it should be fully and effectively implemented. Unilateral sanctions and long-arm jurisdiction, which China resolutely opposes, pose a hazard to economic globalization and international cooperation. China and other members of the international community engage in normal energy cooperation with Iran within the framework of international law, which is fair, reasonable and legitimate. Cooperation as such must be respected and protected.

In other words, the implementation of the JCPOA bears on question, whether the international system with the United Nations as its core is to be upheld, whether the legitimate rights of all members of the international community to cooperate with the others are to be defended, and whether peace, stability and security in regions neighboring the EU, such as the Middle East, are to be maintained. For the international community, the answers to all the three questions cannot be clearer. China will continue to fulfill its commitment under the JCPOA and work with all parties concerned to ensure its implementation.

Ambassador Zhang stressed that nobody would want to see the law of the jungle prevail as human civilization has entered the 21st century.
