Ambassador Zhang Ming Meets Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans

On 13 February 2019, Ambassador Zhang Ming, Head of the Chinese Mission to the EU, met with Mr. Frans Timmermans, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission.

Ambassador Zhang briefed on China’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak and thanked the EU for its support and assistance in this regard. He noted that China would seek stronger cooperation with the international community in an open, transparent and responsible way. It is hoped that the EU will continue to assess the situation calmly and objectively, respect the WHO’s professional recommendations, and work with China to prevail over the epidemic at an early date.

EVP Timmermans said that virus knows no borders and the EU has one hundred percent support for China. In this trying time, what is needed is not panic or discrimination, but solidarity and cooperation.

The two sides also exchanged views about the China-EU relations and cooperation. Both sides shared the view that this year is crucial for China-EU relations with a packed agenda ahead. It is important to explore new opportunities for cooperation in such areas as climate change and biodiversity, uphold multilateralism, and take the China-EU relations forward.
