2018/06/12

On June 12, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met in Beijing with Foreign Minister Ousainou Darboe of Gambia.

Wang Yi said that since the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Gambia more than two years ago, bilateral relations have maintained a momentum of rapid development. Last December, President Adama Barrow paid a successful visit to China. President Xi Jinping and President Adama Barrow jointly planned a development blueprint for China-Gambia relations, and reached important consensus on strengthening mutual support and deepening mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas on the basis of the one-China principle. Under the guidance of the leaders of the two countries, both sides have constantly achieved new outcomes in exchanges and cooperation in such areas as politics, economy and trade, people-to-people and cultural engagement and international affairs. The facts have proved that the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Gambia conforms to the trend of the times, and also brings tangible benefits to the two peoples.

Wang Yi said that the Gambian government firmly adheres to the one-China policy and supports China’s great cause of peaceful reunification through practical actions, for which the Chinese side highly appreciates. It is believed that Gambia will continue to firmly grasp the one-China policy and the general direction of bilateral friendship. China will, as always, firmly support the efforts of the Gambian people in building a new Gambia, and stands ready to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation according to the needs of the Gambian side, so as to promote the constant development of bilateral relations. China welcomes President Adama Barrow’s attendance at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) to be held this September, and is willing to, together with Gambia, make good use of the platform of the FOCAC and join hands to jointly build the “Belt and Road”, in a bid to explore broader prospects for bilateral cooperation.

Ousainou Darboe warmly congratulated China on successfully hosting the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Qingdao Summit, and spoke highly of the positive outcomes achieved from the development of bilateral relations since the resumption of diplomatic relations between Gambia and China. Ousainou Darboe expressed that the Gambian government has drawn up a new national development plan, and the Gambian government and people deeply appreciate the valuable support and assistance China has provided for Gambia in the priority areas of its concern. Gambia’s stance on the one-China issue is explicit and firm. Gambia will consistently adhere to the one-China policy with unswerving resolve. President Adama Barrow has confirmed that he will attend the FOCAC Beijing Summit in China. President Adama Barrow eagerly looks forward to the meeting with President Xi Jinping at the scheduled time, and will fully cooperate with China to successfully host the FOCAC Beijing Summit.
