2019/05/17

On May 17, 2019, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee Yang Jiechi co-chaired on invitation the sixth round of China-Japan high-level political dialogue with head of National Security Council Shotaro Yachi of Japan in Nagano Prefecture.

Yang Jiechi expressed that the current China-Japan relations keep continuous improvement and development, with increasingly positive interaction between the two sides. This year is an important year with special meaning for China and Japan and bilateral relations. The Chinese side is ready to, together with the Japanese side, continuously push for the steady development of China-Japan relations along the right course under the guidance of the four political documents between the two countries and the important consensus reached between leaders of both countries.

Yang Jiechi pointed out that China and Japan have increasingly extensive common interests and the development of the two countries is an opportunity for each other. Both sides should adhere to positive and friendly policies toward each other and translate the principled consensus of regarding each other as cooperative partners rather than threats into policies and actions. Both sides should, on the basis of mutual trust, maintain high-level exchanges, consolidate the political foundation, abide by the spirit of the four political documents between China and Japan, properly handle major issues of principle involving history, Taiwan, and territory, and respect each other's core interests and major concerns. Both sides should take the cooperation as the driving force, continue to promote all-round practical cooperation and have in-depth discussion on new technologies, patterns and models, and constantly explore new converging points of interests and growth points for cooperation to achieve a mutually beneficial and win-win situation at a higher level and in a wider range of areas. The Japanese side is welcome to participate in third-party market cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative with a more active attitude. The two sides should take people-to-people and cultural exchanges as a link, carry forward the traditional friendship among the people, continue to expand personnel exchanges, widely spread the seeds of friendship, and constantly promote people-to-people bonds of the two countries.

Yang Jiechi emphasized that the current international situation faces a lot of instabilities and uncertainties. As important countries and major economies in the world, China and Japan should actively fulfill their important tasks of the times, strengthen communication and coordination under multilateral mechanisms, promote global governance to be more fair and reasonable, promote regional integration and economic globalization, and jointly safeguard multilateralism and free trade, so as to join hands in promoting mutually beneficial cooperation and common development of all countries.

Shotaro Yachi expressed that the current Japan-China relations continue to improve and the leaders of the two countries have maintained close exchanges. Recently, Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party Toshihiro Nikai of Japan has successfully attended the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. The Japanese side fully agrees that the two sides should regard each other as development opportunities and cooperative partners. I am full of confidence in the future development of Japan-China relations. The Japanese side is willing to work with the Chinese side to well prepare for important high-level exchanges in the next stage, to ensure that it will achieve fruitful results and release positive signals. The Japanese side is willing to deepen dialogues and exchanges as well as practical cooperation in various fields between both sides and strengthen communication and coordination in international and regional affairs, so as to continuously push bilateral relations to a new level.

The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern. Yang Jiechi expounded on the Chinese side's principled position on relevant issues.
