2004-05-05 00:00

On May 5, 2004, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council met in Brussels with Belgian Senate President Armand De Decker and President of the Chamber of Representatives Herman Decroo.

Wen conveyed to them the warm greetings from Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China Wu Bangguo. He said that Sino-Belgium relations have been developing smoothly with frequent top-level exchanges and continuous development of economic and trade cooperation between the two countries. Last year has witnessed bilateral trade volume reaching nearly US$7 billion and increasingly expanded investment from Belgium to China. China expects that more large enterprises can seize opportunities and take their own advantages to prosper their business in China.

Wen noted that relation between parliaments is an important part of the bilateral relations. Both the China's NPC and Belgium's Parliament respectively play a significant role in their countries. China and Belgium differ in their systems, which, however, does not hinder mutually-beneficial cooperation on an equal footing between the two sides. The NPC would like to carry out more exchanges with Belgian Senate and the Chamber of Representatives, deepen mutual understanding and contribute to promoting the bilateral relations.

The two Presidents expressed their welcome for Wen's visit to Belgium and respectively indicated that as a great country, China boasts rapid economic growth and increasingly upgraded international status. The Belgian Parliament would like to strengthen its exchanges and communication with China and promote comprehensive development of the bilateral relations through enhanced mutual understanding.
