2007-01-31 00:00

On January 30, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in the Cameroonian capital of Yaounde for a state visit to the country, kicking off his eight-nation Africa tour, which is described as a journey of friendship and cooperation.

At 20:00, local time, Hu's special plane arrived at the Yaounde International Airport. Hu and his wife Liu Yongqing were warmly welcomed by Cameroonian Prime Minister Ephraim Inoni and his wife and other officials at the airport.

In his written speech delivered at the airport, Hu pointed out that despite the distance keeping the two countries apart, the two peoples share a profound traditional friendship. Over the past 36 years after the two countries forged diplomatic ties, the China-Cameroon relations have witnessed steady and sound growth with continuous vitality and dynamism, said Hu. China cherishes its ties with Cameroon and is ready to work with it to strengthen friendly cooperation between the two countries in all areas and jointly write a new chapter in the bilateral friendship, said Hu.

Hu emphasized his current eight-nation Africa tour, as a journey of friendship and cooperation, is aimed at consolidating the China-Africa traditional friendship, implementing the agreements reached during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and expanding pragmatic cooperation for common development.

Hu said he looked forward to exchanging in-depth views with President Paul Biya on the development of China-Cameroon ties, as well as other major issues of common concern and would engage broadly with Cameroonian friends from all walks of life during the visit. He hoped this visit will help build up mutual understanding and trust, deepen the traditional friendship between the two countries, promote friendly cooperation in various fields, and push bilateral ties to a new stage.

Chinese State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan and other accompanying officials arrived by the same plane.

Chinese Ambassador to Cameroon Wang Sifa and other staff of the embassy also greeted Hu at the airport.

Cameroon is the first-leg of Hu's eight-nation Africa tour, which will also take him to Liberia, Sudan, Zambia, Namibia, South Africa, Mozambique and Seychelles.
