On January 31, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, President of the National Assembly of Cameroon (NAC), in Yaounde and both sides held talks on strengthening friendly cooperation between the two countries in a cordial and friendly atmosphere.

Hu said despite the distance keeping the two countries apart, the two peoples share a profound traditional friendship. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 36 years ago, the political exchanges between the two countries have been closer with fruitful cooperation in the areas of economy, trade, education, health and culture. The two countries have also maintained mutual support and close coordination in international affairs, added Hu.

The NAC has kept frequent contacts and friendly cooperation with China's National People's Congress (NPC) for a long period of time, Hu said, adding that such communication has helped build up mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and enrich the contents of the bilateral exchanges. Hu hoped that the NPC and the NAC will continue to maintain friendly exchanges, expand multi-facet cooperation, exchange experience in building democracy and legal system and enhance coordination on multi-lateral occasions, such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), so as to play a positive role in deepening China-Cameroon friendly cooperative relations.

For his part, Cavaye spoke highly of China's Africa policy, describing it as "a new practice in international cooperation." The China-Africa cooperation featuring solidarity, friendship, sincerity and mutual benefits conforms to the common interests of both Chinese and African sides, Cavaye said. The Cameroonian people cherish the bilateral friendship and are deeply grateful for support and assistance offered by the Chinese people for Cameroon's economic and social development, he said. The Cameroonian government, parliament and people firmly support China to complete its grand cause of reunification at an early date. Cavaye said the strong momentum of economic growth in Cameroon in recent years has provided an opportunity for foreign investors. He expected more Chinese enterprises to invest and run businesses in Cameroon and hoped to further cooperation between the NAC and the NPC.

On the afternoon of the same day, President Hu paid a visit to a hospital for children and women built with Chinese assistance and the construction site of a multi-function stadium in Yaounde. He also called on the staff of the Chinese Embassy in Cameroon and representatives from Chinese-funded institutions and overseas Chinese.
