On February 4, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met in Lusaka with Amusaa Mwanamwambwa, Speaker of the National Assembly of Zambia (NAZ). Both sides held cordial and friendly talks on developing bilateral ties.

Hu said since the establishment of diplomatic ties 42 years ago, the two peoples have always shown mutual sympathy, understanding and support in their common cause of safeguarding national sovereignty and building the country and have established an all-weather friendship. Bilateral ties have shown new vigor and vitality in the new historical context with gradually deepening cooperation in all areas and closer exchanges between the two peoples. China cherishes the traditional friendship with Zambia and is ready to work with Zambia to further develop their friendly cooperation, said Hu. The Chinese people will remain a good friend, partner and brother to the southern African country, Hu said.

Hu pointed out that communication between the legislative bodies of both countries constituted an important part of China-Zambia relations. China's National People's Congress (NPC) and the NAZ have always maintained sound cooperative ties and contributed to the cooperation between the two countries in economy, agriculture, education, health, culture and other areas. "China is willing to enhance exchanges and cooperation between the two legislatures for all-round and in-depth development of bilateral ties," Hu said.

Mwanamwambwa said since the establishment of diplomatic ties, bilateral ties have been developing well with the friendship between the two peoples deepened continuously. China has offered precious material and moral support to Zambia, which has played an important role in its development. Recent years have witnessed great progress of the cooperation between the governments, peoples and businesses of both sides, thus consolidating the relations between the two countries. The NAZ also hoped to strengthen exchanges with the NPC for advancing bilateral friendly cooperation, he said.

On the same day, Hu also called on the staff of the Chinese Embassy in Zambia and representatives from Chinese-funded institutions and overseas Chinese.

State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan attended the meeting.
