2007-02-04 00:00

On February 4, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda in Lusaka. Both sides held cordial and friendly talks.

Hu said the two peoples have shown mutual understanding, trust and support to each other for a long period of time with their friendship deepened continuously. Mr. Kaunda is an old friend of the Chinese people and the tree of friendship between China and Zambia planted by Kaunda and older generations of Chinese leaders including the late Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai has withstood the tests of changes in the international arena and both countries' domestic situation and yielded fruitful results. The all-weather friendship between the two countries has a profound historical and social foundation, he said. Hu, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, thanked for Kaunda's outstanding contributions to China-Zambia ties and also wished him good health and a joyful life.

Hu briefed Kaunda on China-Africa cooperation and China's new measures to develop bilateral ties, saying that the traditional friendship between the two countries has shown new vigor and vitality and China is fully confident of the prospects of such ties.

After reviewing the development path of Sino-African and Sino-Zambian relations, Kaunda expressed appreciation for China's important support and assistance in Zambia's struggle for national independence and emancipation, as well as in the development process in Zambia. He also recalled China's assistance in building the Tanzania-Zambia Railway, adding that China's support is of strategic significance to the national development of Zambia and that China is an all-weather friend of Zambia and Africa at large. Kaunda wished the Chinese people greater achievements in their path of national development.

State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan attended the meeting.
