Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian was provoking all the Chinese in advocating the "two countries" fallacy and "walking Taiwan's own road", said Ma Man Kei,vice-chairman of China's top advisory body.

Chen's position to cling to "Taiwan Independence", which was the same as the "state-to-state" statement masterminded by his predecessor Lee Teng-hui, will definitely do harm to the relations across the Taiwan Straits, Ma said in an interview with Xinhua Monday.

The Taiwan leader's statement of "both sides are countries" proved that his commitment of not seeking Taiwan independence in his inauguration speech was merely an expedient measure aimed at deceiving the people in Taiwan and the world opinion, said Ma, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

"The Macao compatriots will never tolerate any splittist activities by a small force in Taiwan," he said.

He urged the Taiwan people to sharpen their vigilance so as notto be cheated by Chen. "Chen is betting on the happiness of more than 20 million Taiwan compatriots and seeking to drive them onto a road of anguish."

Ma said it is a fact recognized all over the world that there is only one China in the world, that both the mainland and Taiwan are part of China, and that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China can't be separated.

What happened after Hong Kong and Macao returned to the motherland proved that the "one country, two systems" principle istotally correct, he noted.

Only through peaceful reunification can the Taiwan compatriots enjoy ever-lasting peace and the Taiwan economy achieve greater space for expansion, he said.

Ma urged Chen and other splittist forces in Taiwan to "rein in at the brink of the precipice" and not to go further on the road of separating China.
