China lodges "solemn representations" to US on Taiwan issue

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- China has lodged "solemn representations" to the United States for allowing the Formosan Association of Public Affairs to host a seminar on Capitol Hill on Taiwan's constitution making, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said here Saturday.

Kong said in a press release that despite China's firm objections, the United States allowed a few Taiwan independence organizations to host the seminar on Taiwan constitutional reform and "allowed Lee Teng-hui, a chief 'Taiwan independence' separatist, to spread separatist remarks" on the occasion.

Such behavior violates the repeated commitments of US leaders, who promised to abide by the one-China policy, observe the three Sino-US joint communiques and stand against Taiwan independence, the spokesman said.

"The behavior also sent dangerous signals to the Taiwan independence forces. China firmly opposes such behavior and has lodged serious representations with the US," he said.

Kong said separatist activities are the biggest threat to the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.

He said China has requested the US to "faithfully implement its commitments to China on the Taiwan issue, take actions to clear up the negative influence resulted in by the issue and stop sending wrong signals to the Taiwan independence forces to avoid causing new damage to the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and Sino-US relations."
