Chen's "easing tension" words nothing but "lies"
2004-10-13 00:00
BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhuanet) -- A spokesman for China's central authorities said here Wednesday that Taiwan regional leader Chen Shui-bian's "easing tension" remarks in his Oct. 10 speech are false words.

"Facts have fully shown that Chen Shui-bian puts on shows of trying to ease tension, but what he is really doing is to promote 'Taiwan independence'," said Zhang Mingqing, spokesman of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, China's cabinet, at a press conference Wednesday morning.

Zhang said since May, Taiwan authorities led by Chen Shui-bian has been gradually escalating "Taiwan independence" separatist activities both in Taiwan and internationally. He listed some of these activities as:

-- Try to separate Taiwan from China through the so-called "constitutional reform".

-- Try to reduce the prominence of China in the official title of Taiwan.

-- Continue to push activities of making Taiwan join the United Nations.

-- Speed up arms purchase and even clamor for war with the motherland.

"Chen Shui-bian claims he has intentions of easing tension and confrontation across the Strait, but in his speech he obstinately sticks to his stand of 'one country on each side' across the Strait," said the spokesman. "Moreover, he continues to deny the fact that Taiwan is a part of China and want only stigmatized and viciously attacked the motherland to fuel the tension across the Strait."

"He had exposed his lies by himself," the spokesman said.

Zhang mentioned that Chen Shui-bian preached in his Oct. 10 speech that "The Republic of China is Taiwan and Taiwan is the Republic of China."

"This was an open and audacious expression of 'Taiwan independence'," he said. "It constitutes another grave provocation to the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."

He said while Chen Shui-bian obstinately sticks to the separatist stand of "one country on each side" across the Strait, the so-called "jointly face and deal with issues concerning the future of the cross-Strait relations raised in his speech is meaningless.

"That's purely cheating the Taiwan people and the international community," said the spokesman.

He said the grave situation across the Taiwan Strait is due to Chen Shui-bian's intensifying efforts to promote "Taiwan independence" separatist activities. "Taiwan independence" constitutes the biggest threat to security across the Taiwan Strait and the Asia-Pacific Region.

He said Chen's separatist activities has aroused strong indignation among the 1.3 billion Chinese people. Safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the core interest of China. The Chinese people will by no means allow anybody to separate Taiwan from China in any means.

Zhang said China's central authorities have numerously reiterated the intention of achieving peaceful reunification with the utmost sincerity and the utmost efforts. He said the May 17 statement jointly issued by the Taiwan Work Office of Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, with approval from higher authorities, solemnly pointed out that if the Taiwan authorities led by Chen Shui-bian acknowledge that there's only one China in the world, and the mainland and Taiwan both belong to one China, and abandon "Taiwan independence" stand and stop "Taiwan independence" activities, cross-Strait relations will usher in bright prospects of peace, stability and development.

"Our stand and attitude have not changed in any way," he said.

He said the mainland has been repeatedly calling for early resumption of cross-Strait dialogue and talks on the basis of the "one-China" principle and shelving political disputes. In 1992, the Association for Relations across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) ofthe mainland and the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) of Taiwan reached the consensus verbally that "both sides across the Taiwan Strait adhere to the 'one-China' principle". The fact allows no denying and cannot be avoided, said Zhang.

"It's our consistent stand and we have reiterated many times that if the Taiwan authorities acknowledge the '1992 Consensus', cross-Strait dialogue and talks could be resumed immediately. Thisstand has never changed," said Zhang.

He said compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are blood and flesh brothers. Peace and stability across the Strait conforms to the interests and aspirations of compatriots on both sides. The mainland is willing to increase exchanges, cooperation, mutual understanding and mutual trust with Taiwan compatriots and jointly usher in a mutual benefit and win-win prospect across the Strait.

He warned that "Taiwan independence" and separatist activities will undermine peace and stability. Chen's wheeler-dealer pursuit of "Taiwan independence" will never bring security, stability and prosperity to Taiwan compatriots, but serious disaster.

He called on the Taiwan compatriots to join the resolute fight against "Taiwan independence" and safeguard cross-Strait peace. Enditem
