2005-02-22 00:00

Beijing Feb.18 -- The Director of China's Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, Chen Yunlin, met the EU's Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana in Brussels on Thursday.

After the meeting the visiting director talked of a friendship between China and the European Union based on trust.

"I had a meeting with Mr. Solana and we talked about the European people and the Chinese people, how our relationship will be based on friendship and trust, and how, hopefully we can resolve a lot of problems in the future."

His visit comes just before US President George W. Bush arrives in Brussels for three days of talks with European leaders.

A possible European proposal to lift a 15 year-old arms embargo against China, a move opposed by Washington, is expected to be on the agenda.
