Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Mission to the EU regarding EEAS Spokesperson's Statement on Ilham Tohti
2014/09/25

(September 24, 2014)

Q: In a statement issued on September 23, the spokesperson of the EEAS condemned the life sentence for separatism handed out to Ilham Tohti - a "respected academic" - and called for his immediate and unconditional release. Do you have any comment?

A: We are strongly dissatisfied with the statement and resolutely opposed to any interference in China's judicial sovereignty and independence. Our resolve and efforts to govern the country under the rule of law will never bend to those irresponsible remarks.

The so-called "respected academic" is a convicted criminal who has openly championed violence, instigated ethnic hatred and stirred up ethnic confrontations in China. Such act is considered as violation of law likewise in Europe. The case has been tried fairly and publicly. Lawful rights and interests of the defendant have been duly protected.
