Xi Jinping Meets with Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada

On November 9, 2014, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper of Canada at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi Jinping pointed out that this visit of Prime Minister Harper to China has achieved positive results. Both sides have reached a series of consensus and agreements on the development of China-Canada relations, established mechanisms on foreign ministers' annual meeting and economic and economic and financial strategic dialogues between the two countries, agreed to strengthen cooperation in energy and resources, energy conservation, environmental protection, financial services and other areas and announced that year 2015 and 2016 are designated as the China-Canada Cultural Exchange Year. In order to well implement these consensus, it is critical for both sides to take a long-term perspective, apply the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, accommodate each other's core interests and major concerns, enhance dialogue and exchanges, deepen mutual trust and cooperation and maintain close communication and coordination on major international issues so as to push forward the healthy and stable development of China-Canada strategic partnership. China is stepping up the fight against corruption. Both sides should strengthen cooperation in the field of law enforcement including the issue on pursuit evasion and recovery of illicit assets.

Harper expressed that Canada-China relations are increasingly important to the Canadian side. He is satisfied with this visit and further more looks forward to the future cooperation between both countries. The Canadian side is willing to, together with China, enhance dialogue, expand trade and investment, well implement arrangements for RMB clearing and promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Canada has no intention to shelter fugitives and stands ready to cooperate with the Chinese side on repatriation. The Chinese has made good preparation for hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Informal Leaders’ Meeting. He wished the meeting a success. The Canadian is willing to cooperate with the Chinese side to jointly cope with global challenges such as terrorism and promote proper settlement of regional hot-spot issues.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others attended the meeting.
